How to Stay Active in the Dreary Months

First of all, I must state that I think I have a different relationship with the cloudy, rainy weather than most people I know. Growing up in North Dakota, winter meant sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and snow drifts as tall as minivans. So when I experienced my first winter in Oregon, I was absolutely in love with the place. Although I’m quite fond of the fall and winter months, I still do notice a shift in my activity preferences and find myself wanting to stay indoors more.

Here are some things I do to stay active during this time of year:

Bike Commuting
Portland is such a bike-friendly town, and bike commuting is a great way to get some exercise everyday. When I first moved here I was a little concerned about how the rain would affect my biking, but I discovered that a relatively small investment in some rain gear was all I needed. Also, an early morning ride is just as good, if not better, than a cup of coffee.

Group Exercise Classes
I’m sure we’ve all felt the tendency to stay indoors and be somewhat isolated during the cold months. What I try to do on a weekly basis is to attend some group exercise classes. Whether you’re into CrossFit, Yoga, Pilates, or Running Clubs, there are many options in the Portland area for all of these activities. It’s a great way to get out of the house, get some exercise, and meet some cool people.
